Humane
Society of the Pikes Peak Region,
New Animal Facility?
Below are Pictures
of the new Animal Shelter of Dreams, one of the proud achievements of Wesley
Metzler the Director of the Humane Society a private organization. He claims
ownership of the facility, although of the $6,100,000 price tag, $3,750,000
came from the taxpayers and that was donated in violation of the Colorado
Constitution, Art. XI sec.2. Click here to read.
Here is where the money
went
The dream turned into a nightmare for the animals, please note their extreme
confinement in the crate like enclosures, approximately two and a half by
eight feet and when the divider is pulled down, that space is cut in half
and the cats still live in cages. All this is what the animals received for
$3,750,000 tax dollars. This facility was not built with the animals in mind,
only a small part of the facility was allocated to house the animals. While
a huge portion of the building is to provide comfort for the people, and to
create a new image. The upkeep of this building is more expensive than the
Humane Society can afford, but Wesley Metzler expected that the taxpayers
would pick up his additional cost that
has nothing to do with the animals.
The citizens of Colorado
Springs voted for a $3,000.000 animal shelter that was listed with four other
capital improvement projects, the ballot did
not mention the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region who is a private organization.
Included in this shelter are after hour's animal drop-offs with self-closing
doors, catering to the irresponsible. But a spay and neuter clinic was excluded
to save money.
Note these roomy dog kennels.
These enclosed dog kennels were not built for the animals comfort. The floors
are slatted
and glass separates the kennels from the hall ways where people may view the
dogs and cats and at the same time it serves as a barrier to keep bad odors
away from the public, that means the kennels are not cleaned often enough.
Look at these pictures
of the new dog kennels.
It is a crime that the old shelter was not properly maintained for the animals.
The extra space was more humane than what they have now in the $6,100,000
building.
This floorplan was obtained under the Freedom of Information Act
Here are pictures of the old dog kennels. Compare them to the cramped spaces of the new ones above.
The dogs had much
more room in the old kennels including an outdoor run. That is a luxury they
don't have in the new building. If nobody takes them outside to relieve themselves,
their small confined space becomes a bathroom, where they have to eat and
sleep, the fresh air that circulates through their enclosure comes from the
hallways, needless to say it also passes through their waste. Judging by the
Humane Society's own admission renovating the old kennels was never part of
its plan. It was neglected by design. It would have been a simple matter
to install a new heating and cooling system, plus lighting, roof repair and
anything that needs fixing, refurbish the floors and a patio type roof over
the outdoor run for protection from rain, snow & heat.
The animals must be thrilled to death to live in such luxury and comfort with
their fate of death hanging over them during their stay at the H.S.P.P.R.
This facility was not built with the animals in mind. It looks more like death
row. Next compare the old cat cages with the new once. Only one problem, they
are still in cages.

Note the wide halls
in this so-called "shelter of dreams" and compare them with the
dog kennels and cat cages.
